The Mercedes Benz G-class adorned with an image of an Irish wolfhound named after philosopher Francis Bacon was offered for sale at Est-Ouest Auctions' contemporary art sale at the JW Marriott Hotel ballroom which was filled with Chinese mainland, Hong Kong, and foreign bidders. The Dog Mobile wasn't the only auction item that failed to attract a bid - a Lucio Fontana painting expected to sell for US$1.60 million garnered zero interest from buyers.

A Newspaper For The Twitter Age

BERG is betting on it. When Webb gave Co.Design an exclusive preview of Little Printer last week ("You're, like, the thirteenth person on earth to see this," he said in Skype conversation from London), he was visibly giddy. "We're sick of not telling everyone about this, so we've just decided to tell everyone," he explained, grinning. Little Printer is exactly that: a palm-sized, cube-shaped, cloud-powered thermal printer with an adorable pair of feet and a cute face. And what does it print? A personalized mini-newspaper--with content curated from partners like The Guardian, social media like Foursquare and Facebook, as well as stuff created by BERG itself--and output on a receipt-like paper strip no longer than 10 inches. "Each information source we think of as a personalised 'publication' that you subscribe to from a kind of 'app store for paper,' collated into a delivery that arrives at a chosen time," Webb tells Co.Design. You "feed" Little Printer by selecting content via a remote-control-esque smartphone app, and then get your mini-newspaper delivered "once or twice a day." Think of it like Flipboard, but without the screen.

On the spotlight: “It’s a gamble every time you put yourself out there, and certainly, I’m always readjusting to it. But I hope it never becomes normal to feel scrutinized.”

Tipping Teacup

"The teacup has an unusual angled bottom that allows it to rest in two different positions. On one side is a screened compartment in which you place your favorite loose tea leaves. Pour hot water through the screen and allow it to steep. Once it's done, simply tip the cup in the other direction, lifting the leaves up out of the water. The cup's large size is perfect for cradling between your hands as you enjoy the warmth of your drink. Screen is removable for simple clean-up. "

The 90° degree vase by Cuatro Cuatros

The 90° vase by Cuatro Cuatros (Four Fours) is based on an illustration of an optical illusion called the 'Penrose Triangle' where three lengths of square cross section are joined to form a triangle. The illusion of continuity is accomplished by 'false perspective' where the image displays ambiguous depth. An opening on the top of the vase accepts stalks of flowers which are are fed with water stored inside the tubular construction of the vessel. Cuatro Cuatros describes the 90° vase thusly: Is this an impossible triangle?
The interposition, orientation and perspective create a contradiction of the space that makes us perceive something that is not. It comes from the Penrose experience. 90 ° is a vase that, based on a drawing, has been converted to a geometrical shape with volume. Depending on the point of view, both ends coincide and make it look like a closed figure.

Image with sunflower seeds

A Shanghai-based artist named Hong Yi paid homage to dissident Chinese artist Ai Weiwei by creating a portrait with only sunflower seeds. She describes the project as follows: “I was inspired last weekend to do a portrait of Weiwei. Initially the idea was to just do a small A4 sized portrait of him, but then I thought I’d bring my materials out to the little lanes of my longtang and do a portrait of him in public…what an attention-seeker, huh? But Ai Weiwei does that too! Oh, guess what medium I used? No, not paint – that’s so BOH-RING! – I collected 100,000/7kgs of sunflower seeds, and this is what I did…”

Raisin Monday in Scotland

Students at St. Andrews University in Scotland were inundated with shaving cream foam today (November 21, 2011) during the annual 'Raisin Monday' ritual. According to University lore, Raisin Monday started back in the early days of the school when freshmen gave upperclassmen a pound of raisins to thank them for helping new students adapt to life at the school. In exchange for the raisins, the upperclassmen give the freshmen a receipt scribed in Latin. Nowadays, bottles of wine have replaced the pounds of raisins and the shaving cream has become a standard tradition.

Walking in the rain

The rain didn't fall in Madrid, Spain this summer. It was arid, hot, and hazy but nary a drop of rain fells from the heavens. That is, until October 28, 2011 when the skies opened up and deluged Madrid with torrents of water, washing away the city's sins, and clearing up the air with the soft scent of fresh-fallen rain. To mark the momentous occasion, design collective  Luzinterruptus installed 'Walking in the Rain' which is made up of 50 overturned rain boots and galoshes which were illuminated from within. The installation was kept in place for 10 hours before the boots were removed.
On the project, Luzinterruptus stated, "Our latest, modest installation, has served to celebrate the fact that it has finally rained in Madrid after a hot summer, in which not a drop of rain had fallen. On October 26th, the clouds finally appeared in the sky, dropping all of the water accumulated during our long summer on the city and leaving in its wake a clean sky and somewhat more breathable air. With our lights we just wanted to encourage people to put on their boots, to go out for a walk and leave the car parked, at least while the rain was reducing pollution levels a little. We finished up wet but happy, with our lungs full of cleaner air."

Actually, the two opposing sentiments are often in a delicate and unstable balance. Our campaign promotes a shift in the balance.'

One of the models makes no sense in its flipped form (the grey and pink version) but maybe it's meant to be used as a cradle for cats.

pillow robot stips snoring

Researchers from Kabe Laboratory at the prestigious Waseda University in Tokyo have developed a robotic pillow shaped like a bear which stops snoring in heavy sleepers. Dubbed 'Jukusui-kun' which translates to 'Mr. Deep-Sleep,' the pillow-bear is fitted with a microphone to detect snoring and is armed with paws which brushes a snorer's head to halt the guttural sounds of sleep. In addition to the microphone, a sensor also monitors the sleeper's pulse and blood oxygen levels - when snoring starts, blood oxygen levels drop and the pulse quickens. Jukusui-kun was exhibited at the 19th International Robot Exhibition (IREX) in Tokyo earlier this month but plans for commercialization have not been announced.
